Psyllium is native to the Mediterranean, but is cultivated in different varieties widely throughout the world, including Russia, China, India, Egypt, Cuba, and Europe.

The seeds are used in Western medicine, and the whole plant is used in Oriental medicine. Its main purpose is as a bulk laxative due to its water-absorbant properties. Psyllium is made up of 10-30% mucilage, consisting of a mixture of polysaccharides, alkaloids, and miscellaneous constituents such as oil, sugars, and triterpenes.
