Gentian can be found in mountainous areas of Europe, and is yellowish-brown or brown in colour. The taste is sweet, then bitter, and the odour characteristic. The root and rhizome are used medicinally, and contain iridoids, xanthones, alkaloids, phenolic acids, and traces of sugar and oil.

Gentian has been found to be a good general tonic, and is used widely to improve digestion, by stimulating gastric secretion and promoting gastric tone. It also assists in stimulating the appetite, and treating gastrointestinal disorders such as heartburn, nausea and gastritis. In Chinese medicine, it is used for conditions such as jaundice, hepatitis, eczema, and conjunctivitis, as well as urinary tract infections.
