The Californian Poppy is native to the Western United States and has been the California state flower since 1890.

It prefers grassy open areas of land and is often found along roadsides and other disturbed areas. Its believed to grow up to 60cm tall with large blue-green foliage. The leaves appear divided and the flowers solitary with a silky texture, they often range in colour from yellow to orange and flower between February and September.

The Californian Poppy is often planted for horticulture, revegitation and highway beautification it is easy to grow and doesn’t need maintaining.

The Californian Poppy Fruit is 3-9cm long and oval in appearance, it splits into two and releases a number of small black/brown seeds

The leaves are believed to have been used medicinally by native americans and the pollen used in cosmetics.
