Product No. P02187

  • Burdock root powder from Arctium lappa L
Also known as Lappa, Bardane, Great or Thorny Burr, Beggar’s Buttons, and Articum majus, burdock grows in hedges and ditches in Europe, parts of Asia, and North America. The plant flowers in June and July, and has broad, blunt leaves growing up to 40cm long, purple, globular flower heads, and brownish-grey wrinkled fruits, about 6mm long by 4mm. The herb has a bitter taste, and the root is sweet and mucilaginous.
Burdock root is used to treat urinary tract and skin infections, such as acne and psoriasis, as well as fungal infections, as it has been found to have antibacterial and antifungal properties (thought to be due to the polyacetylenes). It is also sometimes used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
Fresh burdock root is edible and can be prepared in small amounts as a vegetable.
