  • Thought to prevent the absorbtion of chemicals into the gut
  • Uses in both human and animal care

Activated charcoal or activated coal is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions.

Due to its high degree of microporosity, just 1 gram of activated charcoal has a surface area in excess of 500 m2 (about one tenth the size of a football field), as determined typically by nitrogen gas adsorption.

Activated charcoal has the following authorised EFSA health claim:

  • Activated charcoal contributes to reducing the excessive flatulence after eating

The claim may be used only for food which contains 1g of activated charcoal per quatnified portion. In order to bear the claim information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained with 1g which should be taken at least 30 minutes before and 1g shortly after the meal.
