Also known as Bitter Wood, Jamaica Quassia, Picraenia excelsa, Picrasma excelsa, Surinam Quassia, Japenese Quassia, and Picrasma ailanthoides.
Quassia is native to the West Indies, South America, and Far East, depending upon the variety. The wood is used medicinally, and is whitish, becoming yellow on exposure to the air.

It contains Quassinoids and alkaloids, and is used as a tonic, bitter and anti-malarial treatment. The quassinoids are the active ingredient, and are responsible for the intensely bitter taste.
