During the manufacturing of cheese, a by-product is created called whey. Whey has a high protein content and is often coagulated in order to produce whey protein to be sold as a nutritional supplement.

Different concentrations of whey proteins are produced to cater for varying specifications and uses. The two main concentrations being produced are whey protein 80% and 90%.

The specific protein components of whey products include:

  • Beta-lactoglobulin
  • Alpha-lactalbumin
  • Bovine serum albumin
  • Immunoglobins.
  • Casein

Whey protein is one of the most commonly used supplement products on the market, being applied to both the sport and health sections for multiple applications. The main use being associated with resistance exercise, helping to improve muscle protein synthesis and the growth of lean tissue.
