Product of the Month: Goji Reds Chocolate Bar

By Emma Cattell, research and development nutritionist at Cambridge Commodities

Our Goji Reds Chocolate Bar sits well with the ever-increasing shift towards vegan and clean eating snacks. Despite the exclusion of dairy in this product, the bar has been created to have a smooth, creamy, melt-in-the-mouth feel. Our chocolate bar has been sweetened with the plant-derived sweetener stevia and the lesser known sweetener maltitol, which contains 90% the sweetness of sugar but only half of the calories.

Our CCL Exclusive™ SuperReds blend has been added to this formulation. It is a concentrated blend of red fruit and vegetable powders which also helps to sweeten the bar due to the natural fruit sugars it contains. In addition, our SuperReds blend provides a dose of natural vitamin C. Furthermore, the blend contains Hytolive®, an extract from the olive fruit, which is naturally high in hydroxytyrosol, a phytochemical with powerful antioxidant properties. Whole goji berries can also be found in this bar; already established as a superfood, these berries also add an aesthetically pleasing touch to the bar.

Our Goji Reds Chocolate Bar meets the conditions of the claims ‘low in sugar’, ‘no added salt’ and ‘high in fibre’ which is unusual for a chocolate bar. The high fibre content ensures that the bar will be more satiating than a generic chocolate bar and therefore may be more satisfying. The fat our chocolate bar contains comes almost exclusively from cocoa butter, a superfood in its own right due to its high oleic acid content, otherwise known as the monounsaturated fat omega 9. Research has demonstrated the ability of omega fats to lower damaging LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides whilst increasing beneficial HDL-cholesterol.

Our Goji Reds Chocolate Bar is one of the concepts our NPD team is developing to create healthier alternatives to food, snacking and drink products.
