The marigolds most commonly found in our gardens originate from Mexico and are known as calendulas, also there are 4 other species commonly cultivated.

Marigolds contain yellow carotenoid pigments which are used to add colour to human foods as well as some pet and livestock feeds.

Marigold flowers are often made into an ointment which is believed to help cure a variety of different skin conditions such as burns, eczema, minor wounds, nanny rash and acne. They have been said to reduce inflammation, help control bleeding and soothe irritated tissue.

Given internally by infusion in boiling water it can aid chronic ulcers and varicose veins. Its also believed that by rubbing the head of the flower over the skin it can relieve pain suffered from bee and wasp stings. And when made into a lotion they can aid sprains and wounds, and a water distilled from them can bring relief from sore and inflamed eyes.
