GLYCINE (L)

Product No. P0728

Glycine is a simple non-essential amino acid, and is the only amino acid that is not optically active (it has no stereoisomers). Glycine is one of the 20 common amino acids found in proteins – it is obtained naturally from fish, meat, beans and dairy products.

This amino acid is essential for the biosynthesis of nucleic acids as well as of bile acids, porphyrins, creatine phosphate, and other amino acids.

Glycine enhances the activity of chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) in the brain that are involved in memory and cognition. It may play a role in maintaining the health of the prostate, and one study found it reduced symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Glycine has been found to be helpful in the treatment of low pituitary gland function, and because it supplies the body with additional creatine, it has also been found effectivve in the treatment of progressive muscular dystrophy.

Glycine has been used in the treatment of manic depression, hyperactivity and epileptic seizures. It is also affective as a treatment for gastric hyperacidity, and is included in many gastric antacid drugs.
