SELENOMETHIONINE
Product No. P19096
Selenomethionine is an essential trace element for humans and animals. It is incorporated into molecules of an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase (GPX), a vital enzyme that protects red blood cells and cell membranes against reactions with soluble peroxides.
The dependence of GPX on nutritional selenomethionine clarifies the antioxidant role of this essential micronutrient. It is of key importance for antioxidant defence as well as efficient energy metabolism.
It is thought that selenomethionine may prevent the development and spread of certain cancers in at least two ways. Directly, it is thought to increase the rate at which some types of cancer cells disintegrate in the body, and indirectly, it may have antioxidant properties. (Antioxidants are believed to protect body cells from damage caused by a chemical process called oxidation, which produces oxygen free radicals - natural chemicals that may suppress immune function).
Several large human studies have linked selenomethionine supplementation to a decrease in the occurrence of prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers. In addition, studies showed the progression of certain cancers in individuals was delayed or even halted with supplementation.
Selenium is necessary for several bodily functions, including immune response and thyroid function. Low levels of selenomethionine in the body may contribute to anxiety disorders, depression, heart disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, selenium deficiency may be a factor in some early-pregnancy miscarriages and some types of male infertility. People living with AIDS are often deficient in selenomethionine, possibly because HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, reduces levels within the body.
