Selenomethionine is an essential trace element for humans and animals. It is incorporated into molecules of an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase (GPX), a vital enzyme that protects red blood cells and cell membranes against reactions with soluble peroxides.

The dependence of GPX on nutritional selenomethionine clarifies the antioxidant role of this essential micronutrient. It is of key importance for antioxidant defence as well as efficient energy metabolism.

It is thought that selenomethionine may prevent the development and spread of certain cancers in at least two ways. Directly, it is thought to increase the rate at which some types of cancer cells disintegrate in the body, and indirectly, it may have antioxidant properties.
