PYGEUM AFRICANUM EXTRACT 5:1 Product No. P16227

Pygeum (Pygeum africanum) is a large evergreen tree found in central and southern Africa. The bark was used historically for the relief of urinary disorders, and as a result of more recent investigations, a modern lipophilic (fat soluble) extract was developed.

Chemical analysis and pharmacological studies indicate that this lipophilic extract has three categories of active constituents;

  • The phytosterols, which have anti-inflammatory effects by interfering with the formation of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins that tend to accumulate in the prostate of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). They not only reduce existing inflammation, but prevent it from occuring.
  • The pentacyclic triterpenoids, which have an anti-edema or decongesting effect.
  • The ferulic esters of long-chain fatty alcohol, which reduce levels of the hormone prolactin and also block cholesterol in the prostate. Prolactin increases uptake of testosterone in the prostate, and blocking cholesterol reduces the need for the enzyme typically deficient in men with prostrate disease.

    While it is true that the vast majority of research and use of Pygeum has been in relation to the prostate, there is increasing evidence supporting the use of Pygeum for other symptoms, such as:

  • increased acid levels in patients with gout
  • failure to urinate
  • frequent urination
  • abdominal heaviness

    Results included significant reduction of symptoms and clearance of bladder neck urethra obstruction.
