It has alternate branches which are covered with sharp and strong prickles. The leaves are pinnate and the bark is also prickly.
The berries are black to deep blue and are covered by a grey shell, they grow in clusters above the branches. The leaves and berries both have a lemony odour to them and the bark and berries have a hot, acrid taste.
The root bark and berries are used medicinally and thought very highly of in the United States. The liquid form is believed to act as a stimulant and recommended for chronic rheumatism, typhoid and skin diseases and impurity of the blood.
