PHELLODENDRON AMURENSE
Product No. P16069
Also known as Amur Corktree.
Phellodendron amurense bark extract is derived from a common deciduous tree, from the Rutaceae family. It is extremely bitter; the main constituents of berberine and limonin being especially bitter. Other constituents of the plant are; Berberine, palmatine, obakunone, and limonin.
Phellodendron bark, or Huang-Po, has been used for over 1500 years by the Chinese for centuries to help diminish swelling, inflammation and ‘heat’ (especially in the lower body), soothe gastrointestinal discomfort and diarrohea, and treat kidney and bladder problems. It was also traditionally used to treat intestinal or skin infections, and as an ingredient in many aphrodisiac formulas, to prevent side effects from the main ‘warm’ ingredients. Recent research has shown Phellodendron to be antibiotic, and effective in treating meningitis, eczema, dysentery and vaginitis. It also acts to lower blood pressure and relax the central nervous system, and is believed to be very beneficial as an anti-inflammatory and antihypertensive.
Recently, Phellodendron amurense bark extract has been indicated in research trials to specifically inhibit the action of an enzyme - Cyclooxygenase (COX-2) - that attacks bones and joints. COX-2 is an enzyme that is necessary for inducing pain. Ideally, the COX-2 enzyme is present in our bodies on a limited basis; however, factors such as diet, trauma, and injury can influence COX-2 production. When COX-2 is produced on a continual basis, constant pain ensues. Therefore, inhibiting COX-2 is will help to control muscle and joint discomfort, and reduce redness, swelling and heat.
