Cordyceps is a genus of ascomycete fungi (sac fungi) that includes about 400 described species. All Cordyceps species are endoparasitoids, mainly on insects and other arthropods, a few are parasitic on other fungi. The best known species of the genus is Cordyceps sinensis, first recorded as yarsa gunbu in Nepal in the 15th Century.

Cordyceps sinensis, known in English commonly as caterpillar fungus is considered a medicinal mushroom in oriental medicines, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Tibetan medicine. It is regarded as one of the three best tonics in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is highly regarded for its natural ability to overcome disorders to the kidneys and lungs, and building the immune system.

For over 1200 years, it has been referred to as the 'miracle' of Traditional Chinese Herbal science. It is called 'Cold Fire' because it is powerful and effective, yet naturally gentle and has curative effects on a wide range of chronic diseases, including those difficult to diagnose. It is also very effective in preventing illness. Research has shown that this plant stimulates and builds hormones and it is chemical-free.
