It flowers virtually all year around hence its mass spreading capacity. It can be found virtually anywhere in Britain almost all year round, it is a small plant that spreads rapidly. At first appearance it looks weak and straggle but has great medicinal properties.
It can be used both fresh or dried for use at a later date
Chickweed can be very nutritious it contains calcium, potassium and saponins. But young leaves can be added to salads whilst cooked leaves taste very similar to spinach. Although remember the leaves contain saponins which are said to be potentially poisonous if eaten in large quantities.
The seed is often ground into a powder that can be used to make bread or thicken soups.
It has been said to help heal wounds, inflammation and skin irritations once made into a poultice. The whole plant is reported to have astringent, carminative, demulcent, diuretic and laxative effects. It has been known to soothe severe itchiness even after all other remidies have failed. If taken internally it is useful to treat chest complaints and can also aid digestion.
Chickweed is best harvested between the months of May and July. It can be used both fresh or dried for use at a later date.
