CHICK PEA POWDER Product No. P03184

For chickpeas to grow fully they need to be in a tropical or subtropical climate with more than 400mm annual rain. If grown in a temperate climate the yeilds will be much lower. The average plant is between 20 and 50cm’s high and has small feathery leaves on both sides of the stem, each seedpod contains 2 or 3 peas and its flowers are either white or redish/blue.

Chickpeas are often very popular with vegetarians and vegans as they are one of the plants with the highest amount of protein in. They can be eaten in salads, cooked in a variety of dishes, roasted and spiced an eaten as a snack, ground into flour which is commonly used in Pakistani and Indian Cuisine, ground and shapped into balls and then fried as falafel, stirred into batter which is used to coat meat and vegetables before frying and also baked as farinata or cooked and ground into a paste to make hummus.

There are two different types of chickpeas the first being Desi which has small dark seeds and a rough surface and the second being Kabuli which has larger, lighter coloured seeds that have a much smoother surface.

Chickpeas are suitable for people suffering with blood sugar problems as they have a very low glycemic index. They are a good source or zinc, low in fat and also very high in dietary fibre.
