CATNIP POWDER Product No. P03181


Nepeta is a genus of over 250 species of plants in the Lamiaceae family. Some members of this family are known as Catnips or even Catmints due to their populatity with cats particularly domestic cats. Catnips stimulates their pheromonic receptors. They contain nepetalactone, a terpene which is detected throught the cats olfactory epithelium.

The genus is native to europe, asia and africa but the highest diversity remain in the mediterranean region. The majority of species are herbaceour perennial plants but some are annuals.

Catnips have sturdy stems with green/grayish coloured heart shaped leaves. Their flower are often found in clusters at the tip of the stems and can range in colour from white, pink, purple or blue. They are tubular shaped and have small purple dots on.

Catnip has been recommended as a good companian plant to have due to its effectiveness at repelling mosquitos and other pest insects.

When used as a herbal tea it can promote sweating and during the middle ages was therefore used for the treatment of influenza, colds, fevers and nervousness. It has also been alleged to aid with the treatment of interstitial cystitis which can be a very painful bladder condition, and has also been known to be used as a muscle relaxant. Catnip is also believed to help with flatulence, diarrhea, colic, variuos childhood diseases, as well preventing miscarriages, menstral cramps, premature births and morning sickness.
