Banaba is a botanical extract that comes from the leaves of the banaba tree, which grows in India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
Traditional uses include brewing tea from the leaves as a treatment for diabetes and elevated blood sugar.
Studies show that banaba leaf extract contains a triterpenoid, corosolic acid, and at least three other active ingredients - lagerstroemin, flosin B and reginin A.
Corosolic acid helps regulate blood sugar by stimulating glucose uptake, having an effect similar to that of insulin, which induces glucose transport from the blood into body cells. In a study of humans with type II diabetes, banaba extract showed a 30% reduction in blood glucose levels.
For some people, fluctuations in blood sugar and insulin are related to appetite, hunger and food cravings – particularly for carbohydrates such as bread and sweets. By keeping blood sugar and insulin levels in check, banaba helps people to lose weight safely and quickly – it has no known negative side effects. It also produces the positive effects of lowering trigyceride and LDL cholesterol, which aid in weight loss. In one study, participants averaged a weight loss of 3.2 pounds per month without changing their diet.
Corosolic Acid has strong antioxidant properties that help to prevent damage by free radicals.
