Motherwort grows in waste places throughout Europe and sometimes in Britain. The leaves are thin-stalked and the tiny flowers, which grow at regular intervals along the stem, are pinkish-purple or white.
Motherwort is used as a cardiac tonic, and to treat heart problems caused by anxiety and stress, especially irregular or rapid heartbeat. It is sometimes used in conjunction with other medication to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland).
Motherwort is also useful as a sedative, nervine and antispasmodic, and helps to treat menstrual pain and cramps, due to the number of alkaloids it contains.
