MACA POWDER Product No. P1301

Also known as Lepidium meyenii and Peruvian Ginseng.
MACA is a member of the radish family. For centuries, the Maca root has grown wild in the Andes mountains of South America, and no other food plant exists in the world which will grow at so high an altitude and survive.

Native shepherds soon learned that as they grazed their herds in higher elevations, where Maca grows naturally, the herds became healthier, and much more sexually active. The Andean Herd People began to include Maca in their diets, and found it helped promote increased energy and stamina. It was also traditionally used as an aphrodisiac for both men and women, and by Tahuantinsuyo Empire troops before battle, to increase their physical strength.

Maca root contains significant amounts of amino acids, complex carbohydrates, vitamins B1, B2, B12, C and E and minerals, including calcium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and iron. It also contains several flavones and flavonoid glycosides, which may support the balance of female reproductive hormones.

In modern medicine, Maca is used to;

  • Increase energy and vitality - possibly due to its effect of causing an increase in the serum levels of human growth hormone (HGH)
  • Balance blood iron levels
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Promote the use of glucose in the bloodstream for energy (rather than being processed into fat storage)
  • Decrease anxiety and stress
  • Assist insomnia
  • Promote mental clarity and concentration
  • Boost work capacity
  • Treat respiratory problems
  • Assist fertility
  • Treat male impotence and erectile dysfunction

    It is also useful for female menstrual irregularities and hormone imbalances, including the menopause. Women with hot flushes, mood swings and most associated menopause symptoms have found they diminish dramatically whilst taking Maca.

    Due to the number of steroidal glycosides present in Maca root, it is gaining popularity among weight lifters and body builders as a natural alternative to anabolic steroids. It is thought to increase stamina and endurance in athletes and buffer the effects of stress.
