In order for Lychees to thrive they require a warm subtropical climate that is cool but also free of any frosts, with high temperatures, rainfall and humidity. Warm humid summers are best for flowering and fruit development and cooler temperatures are needed for flower bud development. They are often grown in Asia, India, Japan, California, Hawaii, Florida, the wetter areas of eastern Australia and the sub-tropical regions of South Africa.
The fruit matures approximately 100 days after flowering and is best between July and October.
The fruit is 3-4cm long and the same in diameter. The rind is reddy pink in colour and is roughly textured. It is inedible but can be easily removed from the fruit. The inside is a smooth translucent white flesh that is sweet to the taste. Its rich in Vitamin C and the texture is similar to that of a grape. The flesh covers a hard nut like seed in the centre which is also inedible and can be slighty poisonous.
When dried the rind often stays intact and the flesh shinks and darkens.
