GYMNEMA SYLVESTRE EXTRACT
Product No. P0740
This herb is native to India, and has been used by healers there for for thousands of years as part of the traditional system of medicine. Gymnema was known in the past as gurmar, which means 'sugar killer', as it was observed that chewing leaves from this herb suppressed the sweetness of sugar.
For centuries, gymnema extracts have been used to treat diabetes - a disorder characterised by excess sugar in the blood. Gymnema has been a useful treatment for both Type I and Type II diabetes - the former being most common amongst children, whose bodies cannot produce enough insulin in the pancreas, and the latter being caused by a decline in insulin production or by the body no longer using it efficiently, especially common in older people.
Studies have shown that gymnema not only lowers blood sugar, but may help repair damaged cells in the pancreas, the gland in which insulin is produced. This means insulin production will be improved.
Gymnema is thought to reduce the urge to eat sweets, and many people have found drinking beverages with gymnema extract makes sweet things taste bitter for a couple of hours. It is therefore considered a useful treatment for obesity, which is a major risk factor for diabetes and many other health problems.
