It has a long history of cultivation for this fruit and is thought to have originated somewhere in the desert oases of north africa or southwest asia, its exact origin is unknown. It grows between 15-25m tall and often has several trunks leading from a single root.
The date comes from the drupe of the tree. It is oval in shape and has a diameter of 2-3cm and a length of 3-7cm. Dates ripen in 4 stages when unripe they range between bright red and bright yellow in colour depending on the variety and when ripe their apperance is brown. Within the centre of each fruit is a stone. There are three main groups of dates which exist, soft, semi-dry and dry.
Fresh dates are a great source of Vitamin C and due to their low water content they do not become much more concentrated when dried.
Dates have a high content of tannin and are used for medicinal purposses such as a detersive and astringent for intestinal troubles. Its also used as an infusion, decoction, syrup or paste that can be taken to ease sore throats, colds, bronchial catarrh and fevers. It is also believed to counteract alcohol intoxication and the seed powder is ofetn used in traditional medicines.
