CURCUMIN Product No. P0349

Also known as Curcuma Longa, Turmeric, Indian Saffron, Indian Valerian, Jiang Huang, and Red Valerian.
Curcumin is the naturally occurring active constituent of Turmeric (a yellow pigment), and is a powerful free radical fighting antioxidant. It is part of the ginger plant family, and has been identified as an important substance because of its wide-ranging health benefits. It is used as a supplement for atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), ulcers, bursitis, rheumatoid arthritis, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, and AIDS.

Recently, studies have been confirming curcumin to be a promising treatment in cancer patients. Researchers have found that this powerful extract slows the proliferation of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death). One such study found that curcumin, also inhibited prostate cancer cell proliferation by interfering with the cells’ protein signalling pathways that usually starts the growth process. Another study showed the same apoptosis action on gastrointestinal and colon cancers.

Curcumin has been shown to inhibit the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the development of certain cancers and chronic inflammatory diseases. It has also been identified as an inhibitor in abnormal platelet aggregation, which could lead to a heart attack or stroke.
