CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID (CLA) Product No. P0334

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a wide term which groups together a mixture of positional and geometric isomers of C 18:2 fatty acids that have conjugated double bounds. These fatty acids arise along the ruminal process, which ends with stearic acid, a stepped pathway carried out by rumen bacteria. Natural sources of CLA are red meats and fatty dairy products, which are mainly bovine derivatives.

Numerous beneficial effects are attributed to CLA, including the ability to slow down or even prevent tumour development. Evidence from studies with animals shows that CLA consistently produced anti-tumour effects, reducing the incidence, progression, and number of tumours. This led to a statement from the National Academy of Science, who advised in 1996 that ‘Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is the only fatty acid shown unequivocally to inhibit carcinogenesis in experimental animals’.

CLA has been the subject of much research in the past several years, and findings suggest that benefits of CLA include the following:

  • Increases metabolic rate
  • Decreases abdominal fat
  • Enhances muscle growth
  • Lowers cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Lowers insulin resistance
  • Reduces food-induced allergic reactions
  • Enhances immune system

Chitosan is derived from chitin, which is found in the exoskeletons of shellfish such as crabs and prawns. It is similar to plant fibre in that it cannot be digested by the human body.
