Cod liver oil first became established in the fishing communities of Scotland, Iceland, Norway and Greenland several centuries ago. It was used as protection against the rigour in the intense cold that the fishermen were exposed to. Traditionally, a daily dose of cod liver oil (CLO) was used to relieve such complaints as rheumatism, aching muscles and stiff joints. It has since been scientifically proven to be beneficial for these purposes, and a recent study showed it could delay, or even reverse the destruction of joint cartilage and inflammatory pain associated with arthritic disease. During the 1890s, it was commonly used to treat rickets, which affected nine out of ten malnourished children.
Cod liver oil is now known to be a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. In the 1950’s, research was carried out into the essential fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) contained in cod liver oil and other oily fish. This research has shown that, due to these two major constituents, cod liver oil is also a benefit to the heart and circulatory system, as well as for rheumatism and joint problems etc.

The chia plant is an annual that belongs to the mint family. Chia seeds are considered ‘superfoods’ for their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, and α-linolenic acid. They are also rich in protein, fat, dietary fibre, and essential minerals. Chia seeds slow down the speed the body converts carbohydrates into simple sugars, and swell to create a feeling of fullness, and are therefore ideal for assisting in weight management.

Chitosan is derived from chitin, which is found in the exoskeletons of shellfish such as crabs and prawns. It is similar to plant fibre in that it cannot be digested by the human body. Chitosan is a fat blocker, absorbing four to six times its weight in fat as it passes through the digestive tract. It thereby flushes fat out of the body before it becomes metabolised and stored as excess body weight.
