COD LIVER OIL Product No. P0337

Cod liver oil first became established in the fishing communities of Scotland, Iceland, Norway and Greenland several centuries ago. It was used as protection against the rigour in the intense cold that the fishermen were exposed to. Traditionally, a daily dose of cod liver oil (CLO) was used to relieve such complaints as rheumatism, aching muscles and stiff joints. It has since been scientifically proven to be beneficial for these purposes, and a recent study showed it could delay, or even reverse the destruction of joint cartilage and inflammatory pain associated with arthritic disease. During the 1890s, it was commonly used to treat rickets, which affected nine out of ten malnourished children.

Cod liver oil is now known to be a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. In the 1950’s, research was carried out into the essential fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) contained in cod liver oil and other oily fish. This research has shown that, due to these two major constituents, cod liver oil is also a benefit to the heart and circulatory system, as well as for rheumatism and joint problems etc.

Cod liver oil contains;

  • Vitamin A - essential for the immune system, bone growth, night vision, cellular growth, testicular, and ovarian function.
  • Vitamin D - needed for the absorption and utilisation of calcium and potassium, which are required for skeletal growth.
  • EPA and DHA - Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), omega-3 fatty acids, which are converted in the body to produce prostaglandins These prostaglandins affect a wide variety of physiological processes due to their modulating effect on the action of hormones. It is thought that EPA and DHA may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, and it is thought that DHA seems essential for normal brain development in unborn babies.

    The Benefits of cod liver oil include;

  • Blood flow – aided by EPA and DHA, which is thought to discourage blood platelets from sticking together.
  • Blood pressure – EPA and DHA may help reduce blood pressure as it has a regulatory effect.
  • Coronary heart disease – research has shown that cod liver oil reduces the likelihood of blood clotting, makes the heart less prone to arrhythmias (irregular heart beats), and alters the balance of blood fats in a favourable way. As it reduces the viscosity of blood, blood flow is also improved.
  • Bones and teeth – cod liver oil is a good source of vitamin D, which helps bones and teeth to remain strong and healthy.
  • Vision – vitamin A is essential for eyesight and enhancing night vision, as it is a necessary component of macular degeneration, which protects the eyes.
  • Healthy skin and mucous membranes – the vitamin A contained in cod liver oil is beneficial for skin and mucous membranes.
  • Pregnancy – omega-3 fatty acids are important for the brain development of the foetus.
  • Arthritis – Studies have shown improvements in the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and destruction of joint cartilage. Cod liver oil is believed to delay, or even reverse arthritic diseases.
