Also known as Gallium aparine, Bedstraw, Clivers, Cleaverwort and Catchweed.
Cleavers can be found in Europe, Asia and North America. It is an annual plant found in moist or grassy places, and along riverbanks. A slender taproot produces the weak, climbing prickly stem that grows from 2 - 6 feet long. The rough, oblong-lanceolate to almost linear leaves occur in whorls of 6 or 8 around the stem. The small, white or greenish-white flowers grow from May to September. The fruit consists of two joined, bristly, globular, one-seeded carpels.
The active constituents in cleavers includes; iridoid glycosides, bioflavonoids, coumarins and tannins. The leaves, stems and flowers of the Cleavers herb are used medicinally, and it has astringent, anti-inflammatory, alterative, diuretic, tonic, hepatic, laxative and vulnerary effects.
Cleavers is a cleansing herb and is often used in detox programmes - it is an excellent therapy for clearing a congested lymphatic system, due to the iridoid glycosides it contains, and is considered one of the best tonics for the lymphatic system available. It is also used for treating water retention and aiding healing of burns, psoriasis and other skin infections.
Cleavers can be used to treat tonsillitis, ulcers, and tumours due to its lymph-cleansing and draining properties, and it is helpful in the treatment of swollen glands anywhere in the body since this action detoxifies the tissue. It is also excellent for many skin disorders, including psoriasis, and is useful in the treatment of painful cystitis and other urinary conditions.
