Chromium is an essential trace element for humans. It plays a role in the metabolism of glucose, and is necessary for energy production. Since this mineral assists in the production of insulin, it helps to stabilise blood sugar levels and can be beneficial for people with hypoglycemia and diabetes. Chromium polynicotinate is more effective than any other type of chromium, as it binds the elemental chromium to niacin (vitamin B3) - this provides a biologically active form of chromium, which is more absorbable in the body.
It is estimated that as many as 90% of diets are low in chromium. Eating a lot of highly processed foods may contribute to this problem because foods lose chromium during the refining process. Eating too many sugary foods, exercising strenuously, and having an infection or physical injury can also cause your body to lose chromium. Low levels can increase blood sugar and raise triglyceride (a type of fat) and cholesterol levels.
