Also known as Agathosma betulina. Buchu is a small, low shrub native to the Cape region of South Africa where it is used as a popular flavouring agent for its peppermint-like flavour.
The two primary species of buchu used commercially are Agathosma betulina (syn. Barosma betulina) and Agathosma crenulata (syn. Barosma crenultata). The leaves of buchu contain volatile oils as well as flavonoids.
Buchu gained wide use in Europe and Africa where the dried leaves have a long history of use as a traditional herbal remedy for a variety of treatments. Buchu contains the volatile oil 'barosma champhor' which accounts for its mild diuretic and antiseptic activity. The long leaves of this herb are used today in the treatment of inflammation of the urethra, blood in the urine, bladder infections and other chronic urinary tract disorders. It is also said to be an effective remedy for kidney stones, cystitis, and rheumatism, and is used to treat inflammation of the prostrate.
Buchu is considered to be an extremely safe herb and there are no reported toxic effects.

The chia plant is an annual that belongs to the mint family. Chia seeds are considered ‘superfoods’ for their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, and α-linolenic acid. They are also rich in protein, fat, dietary fibre, and essential minerals. Chia seeds slow down the speed the body converts carbohydrates into simple sugars, and swell to create a feeling of fullness, and are therefore ideal for assisting in weight management.

Chitosan is derived from chitin, which is found in the exoskeletons of shellfish such as crabs and prawns. It is similar to plant fibre in that it cannot be digested by the human body. Chitosan is a fat blocker, absorbing four to six times its weight in fat as it passes through the digestive tract. It thereby flushes fat out of the body before it becomes metabolised and stored as excess body weight.
