APRICOT POWDER Product No. P01171

The apricot tree is a fruit bearing tree which is part of the Plum genus. It is native to China and in the latter years has been spread through Europe. The apricot was brought to the English colonies by the settlers and most of todays production of apricots in America come from seedlings carried over to the west coast by Spanish missionaries.

Most US production is now based in California, with only a small proportion taking place in Oregon and Utah. It is a myth that the apricot is a subtropical fruit ,as it is actually native to a region with cold winters and can stand temperatures as low as –30°C. Many apricots are now cultivated in the southern regions of Australia, particularly Victoria and Tasmania.

The apricot tree is a small to medium sized tree with heart like shaped leaves, with pointed tips and flowers a pinky white in colour. The fruits are yellow to orange in colour and look similar to a small peach or nectarine with a small stone in the centre. The skin is smooth and sometimes has a faint red haze.

Fresh or dried apricots are excellent for health and beauty, just 3 apricots contain 50% of the recomented daily intake of beta-carotein and a significant leven of Iron. Dried apricots are also believed to be a potent laxative. Powdered apricot can also be added to food and wine for a distinct flavour enhancer.

The kernals from apricots are often ground and added to a variety of beauty treatments and face masks.
