Alpha Trim W is a potent amylase inhibitor isolated derived from wheat protein, and has 3 to 6 times the strength of bean-based starch blockers. Alpha Trim-W is used to help weight loss, and is beneficial due to the fact it inhibits up to 90% of amylase activity, slowing/preventing the digestion of starches in the stomach and intestine, and so prolonging the sense of fullness and reducing caloric intake.
The use of starch blockers has recently increased in popularity with the growth of carbohydrate-restricted diets, such as Atkins. There are many enzymes in the human digestive system that help digest the variety of foods we consume. The alpha amylase enzyme is responsible for breaking down starchy foods, such as bread, potato, pasta and rice, into sugars that can be absorbed through the intestinal wall. Alpha amylase inhibitors are molecules which interfere with the action of this enzyme.
The evidence for the effectiveness of wheat-derived AAI is backed up by the Mayo group, who in 1995, published a paper describing it as having a significantly higher activity against human pancreatic amylase than bean-derived AAI. They also found that the wheat-derived AAI was effective against human salivary amylase while the bean-derived AAI was not. This is important because salivary amylase digests a portion of ingested starch in the stomach, before it enters the intestine and is exposed to pancreatic amylase.
