Folic Acid prices increase

Fri 22 May 2015

Following a period of relative stability in the price of folic acid a sudden increase in the cost of this raw material has recently occurred.

There are only a limited number of suppliers in the market, primarily located in China. In the spring of 2014, China introduced stricter legislation on the discharge of waste products by folic acid producers amongst others.

This stricter legislation has led to at least a 60% decrease in Chinese manufacture with the largest producer stating that it will not produce any Folic Acid in 2015 at all.  The overall result is a global shortage of raw material with its limited availability increasing prices to currently 20 times what it was last year.
